Christening is a ceremony where an infant, child or adult is removed of all sins to begin a new life with God. Christening is a sort of death and resurrection. It marks the end of an old way of life, and the start of a new life, which is enjoyed in the company of other Christians. The New Testament teaches that the baptismal ceremony depicts how Jesus died and rose again. Christening is the rite of initiation by which people enter the church. This belief is symbolized by the fact that the font is located at the door of the church. Christians understand christening to be an act of renunciation.
The parents of the infant, or the baptized adult, are asked if they repent of their sins and renounce all evil. It also marks the beginning of a new life with God and a form of spiritual cleaning. The water used in the christening ceremony is a symbol for spiritual cleansing and the removal of sin from human life by the death and resurrection of Jesus.
Although streams and lakes are occasionally used for christening, it usually takes place in a church. Some churches have a baptistery, a sort of pool, built into the floor. The applicant contacts the minister a few weeks before and request the christening. The minister or priest then questions the applicant to confirm his personal commitment to Jesus Christ as well as makes sure that he has some understanding of what it means to follow him.
On the christening day, boys dress in a shirt and flannels and girls dress in a white baptismal gown. Hymns, reading, prayers and a sermon are performed, and then the Priest or Minister puts on his christening boots. The candidate stands in the baptistery and gives a statement about how they came to have faith in Christ, and then the Minister or Priest says his name, then plunging him into the water, baptizing him “into the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit.” Hymns of faith are sung as the candidate leaves for the dressing room. A Christening Party Celebration usually follows the baptismal service.
